Kai O'hana

~The Boat~

Kai O'hana~

Kai O'hana is a 75ft (60ft on deck) Italian designed and built wooden gaff-rigged ketch. She was purchased by the Bach Family on the island of Sint Maarten/St.Martin at the end of 2005 as the boat Saudade. She was 43 years old, overly built(double 8"x3" oak frames spaced 8" apart), had sailed in some of the most challenging seas in the world (the western Indian Ocean and around the Cape of Good Hope) and was suffering from freshwater damage to her decks and topsides though most of the hull had been spared damage. The Bachs pulled her out of the water and refitted her hull with the help of a 12 man crew from the island. She was “splashed” on Thursday, July 6, 2006 13:52:47 after a re-christening ceremony performed by Gregg Buyskes. The Bachs are currently refitting the decks, engine, and interior so that she can pass inspection and get underway.

Craig Bach~

Not your typical Dad--when he hears there's a hurricane coming he gets out his surfboard! No swell, not a problem, he’ll pull out his skateboard. Wanting to keep up with his family he also achieved a first-degree black belt in Taekwondo. He's always reading several books at a time, and if he writes you an e-mail it's inevitably three pages long. One of Austin's innovative 'green builders', he is known for environmentally friendly building and design of custom homes, he also built a church, and a dormitory for the University of Texas. Many described Craig as a visionary. His lifelong dream has been to sail around the world. Fortunately his family is willing to indulge him! Because of his tenacity he will challenge the status quo, speaking his mind, living and seeing life as adventure.

~Lauren Bach

She laughs a lot, thinks outside the box, and empowers everyone around her. After a conversation with Lauren you feel anything is possible. Somehow she managed to launch Lauren Bach Realty while raising four kids, at times even home schooling them. Because she enjoys participating in her family’s lives, she achieved a second-degree black belt in Taekwondo, and learned to surf (oh yes! at a surf camp solely for women). In preparation for the adventure ahead she volunteered her time to the Austin Yacht Club’s Jr. Sailing Program. Coach Steve Gay snagged her as his assistant for the high school sailing team. Her passion for community service is rivaled only by her passion for life. Lauren is the kind of charismatic, vibrant person you want as your best friend...

Her basic philosophy is “If it makes you unhappy then you shouldn’t do it.”

~Preston Bach

Seventeen-year old Preston loves the water, a true Kai Kane. He dives, fishes, surfs, and sails in competitive small boats. Austin Yacht Club awarded him the Ron W. Harden Memorial Trophy for most improved junior male sailor. When he is a not doing daredevil feats like driving on-road vehicles off road, skateboarding, or mountain biking, he is a singer and songwriter. He enjoys being with the family and his dad is his best friend. He knows what he wants, and he generally knows how to do it (or at least who to ask!). Preston’s ambition makes him a dreamer, with big ideas. Every time he turns around it seems like he’s got another great idea. He’s unbelievably practical, patient, and almost always finding a workable solution for any problem. Preston helps inspire everyone around him to greatness. He's that brother you adore because the minute you're ready to kill him— the next he makes you laugh despite yourself...

Alexis is friendly, she will talk to anyone she meets and would make a friend a day if she tried. She's always up for anyone's crazy idea, and often thinks up a few of her own... Even though she is the youngest person in the family, she has the ability to have razor-sharp scrutiny of all situations, which makes her a force to reckon with should she be crossed, though her demeanor is almost always one of calm consideration. She consistently proves her abilities as a young adult by understanding more of the world than others her age. Being the peacemaker, she reminds those around her to be ever light hearted, in harmony and to enjoy the moment.

Chad Adams~

Twenty-one year old Chad is close to every member of the Bach family. His modest goal in life is "to learn everything". Chad transformed himself from a troubled teen (outwardly expressed as all black clothing, dreadlocks and a scowl) into the remarkable young man he is today. A skilled learner, he is specializing in photography, entrepreneurialism, and mechanics. At times witty and sarcastic, Chad is endlessly entertaining. He is also a tireless troubleshooter, harnessing his determination in order to solve any problem that arises. He's the guy you call when the computer goes down, the boat engine breaks, or when you just need a good friend to laugh with. His hobbies include bicycling, photography, reading, movies, music, drums, the didgeridoo, hiking, and learning not to sink...
